Giving Thanks: The Awesome Power of Gratitude

World peace through gratitude. So simple, yet so perfect.

Years ago I read that in order to manifest more of anything, one of the things you can do is to focus your attention on it. It doesn’t matter if it’s something you want more or less of, where attention (aka your energy) goes, energy flows.

Patting yourself on the back for having an organized closet enough times can trigger a seemingly effortless (or at least easier than you thought) reorganization of your entire house. Believing and telling everyone you’re feeling sicker and sicker can help turn a simple sniffle into a serious sinus infection. Needless to say, if you want to experiment with this theory on yourself, I highly recommend the former over the latter.

This revelation lead to my parking space experiment. Whenever I’d get a good parking space, I’d give thanks. In the beginning I was giving thanks in general- to whoever was listening, I suppose. Over time this invisible someone became known as the “Parking Fairy” or my friend “Tony” (aka St. Anthony, because he’s in charge of finding things). The thankfulness was always sincere, whether I felt the helpers to be real or imaginary. It’s now extremely rare that I have to wait for a parking space or that I get a bad one, even when out-of-town.

What I didn’t know at the time, is that emotions are essentially electromagnetic charges which affect the body and surrounding energetic fields. The Institute of HeartMath, a nonprofit scientific research organization has found that sincere gratitude, one of the strongest positive emotions, can synchronize rhythms of the brain and heart, bringing the body to a state of coherence which is measurable with the instruments they have developed. This state helps the body function more efficiently. Emotions are balanced and mental clarity and brain function are increased.

If we have energetic connections to all other beings and matter, can synchronized periods of group coherence bring about universal desires for something better than parking spaces- world peace perhaps? After all, the Vedic and Hermetic principle of “As above, so below” postulates that smaller systems are a reflection of the larger, and vice versa. So if the home is the microcosm of the earth, and the home is brought into order, then given enough encouragement, can our world become orderly as well?

To research this, one of HeartMath’s most ambitious projects is the Global Coherence Initiative, whose mission states it is a “science-based, co-creative project to unite people in heart-focused care and intention, to facilitate the shift in global consciousness from instability and discord to balance, cooperation and enduring peace.”

You can visit the Insitute of HeartMath’s website for more information on their groundbreaking research and training, take a Stress & Well Being Survey, and have access to other free resources. Also visit their world peace project on the Global Coherence Initiative website. I highly recommend their monthly synchronized care focus.
